All washing machines will break down at some point in life. Repairs are a necessary part of appliance machinery. When appliances break down it is important to find a good and experienced appliance repair professional to repair the issue and get it working again.

That being said, are there things that can be done to extend the life of your washing machine before it breaks down or dies? Absolutely. Here are some things that you can do to keep your washing machine running longer:

1. Don't overload your washing machine. Stuffing your washer full to the rim with clothes is actually one of the absolute worst things you can do for your machine. People have a habit of overloading their machine because they want to save money. They reason that the more clothes they fit in the washer for a load of laundry, the less water they are using, the less energy they are using, and the less time they will have to take doing 2 loads of laundry.

Avoid overloading your machine by keeping the level of clothes you put in the machine to about 2/3 full. You should leave around a 10cm gap, or a little more than a hand-width, between the laundry and the top of the machine.

2. Run a cycle on your machine with out clothes in it every once in a while. This is known as a "dry" cycle, because you are actually cleaning out your machine and not worrying about getting your clothes wet. Washing machines will build up over time, so running your machine through a cycle on its own will help break down that dirt and grime build-up, which can cause major problems with efficiency and the cleanliness of your laundry.

You can also use a washing machine cleaner to help clean the machine and stop mildew from building up. Washing machine cleaner is run on a "dry" cycle with out clothing in it, and should be done about two times a month.

3. Check the hoses of your washing machine. Are any loose or do any need to be replaced? Hoses should be checked on a regular basis to make sure that everything is running the way it should with your machine. Hoses are typically replaced every 5 years. It's important to watch for any issues with hoses since it could start a leak, which can flood and damage your home.

4. If you are leaving and not using your washer for a while, don't risk keeping the water attached to it. Turn off the water flow to the washer. Having the washer attached to constant water pressure, but not using the machine, can cause leaks to occur, and a lot of damage.

5. Keep your lid to the washing machine open in between uses. This airs out the washer, which will help keep unpleasant odors and mildew from building up. Be very careful to do this in areas that are prone to humidity, like basements.
