All of a sudden you are 30 and you do a balance sheet only to find that you don't have anything you want, neither the qualifications, nor the job, nor the life. What do you do? Some people will tell you to draw up a life management plan. That's easier said than done. A plan is not something that exists only on paper; you also have to follow through. And then, your perspective shifts over time. You have to reset your goals because you no longer desire the things you once desired. Here are some tips on how to beat life blues and get more bang for your buck.

The first rule to establish is the rule of benefit. Do not attend that conference, do not make that phone call and do not figure on that mailing list if you are getting nothing out of it. Before doing anything, always think about the benefit it will derive for you. Be selfish with your time and energy. This rule also extends to the time you spend on social media. Don't spend hours tweeting or exchanging photos of your last trip to Bali, unless you are deriving concrete benefit from it.

Do not check your email once every hour. It can not only be frustrating, but is also a waste of time. Deal with mails that need an urgent response first. Delete junk mail from unknown sources, or from sources known to be not useful. You will be saving a lot of time if you hire a managed services firm to assist you.

Always check the name of the sender and have the first line visible so that you know what the mail deals with. That way you can tackle mail that needs urgent attention first and keep the rest on wait. We all receive a lot of unwated mail everyday, and it shouldn't take an IQ of !80 to figure out what is junk and what is useful.

Use the calendar function in Outlook or keep a diary. Remind yourself to check it from time to time. Better still, write down your goals and then plan how to achieve them day by day, week by week, quarter by quarter. If you don't write them down, they won't take concrete shape for you. Put some method in your life and don't be busy for the sake of being busy.

One of the surest ways of reducing stress is to leave your mobile on your desk everytime you leave your office to attend a meeting or talk to a colleague. You will be able to pay attention to the business at hand and terminate the encounter feeling much fresher than if you had to attend to the phone every now and then. Have some method in your life.

Do not, repeat, do not schedule meetings at the end of the day. This is the time when people are anxious to get back home. They are tired and edgy and do not give 100% of their attention to what they are doing. They are unable to decide and to act on decisions that are taken. You should always schedule meetings in the morning so that everybody knows what they are doing.

Treat everybody with kindness and gentleness. Never forget the value of ordinary good behavior. Treat people the way you would want them to treat you. Goodwill is not an illusion. All life management, finally, is about giving to yourself before giving to others.
