When they hear the term air pollution, most individuals think of smog and other outdoor problems. However, the atmosphere inside your home or office may be more polluted than that found outside the home. A Stuart air conditioning & heating service offers the following tips for easier breathing.

Keep your floors cleans. Carpets and other flooring trap allergens and chemicals inside a home. Many standard vacuums just stir up the problem. A vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter helps to keep the unit from just blowing the harmful chemicals back into the room. Take time to clean walls, corners and edges of floors. The upholstery on furniture also provides a trap.

The humidity in a home should be in the 30-50% range. This helps to reduce the growth of mold and dust mites. If you live in a humid area, your HVAC system may need the boost of a dehumidifier. If your home has a basement, work to keep the humidity level within the recommended range. Use exhaust fans when cooking or showering.

Your home should be a smoke free zone. Second hand smoke can affect the health of children and others living in the home. If you smoke, get help to succeed as you try to stop.

Have the house tested for radon. It is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas. Radon increases the chances of developing lung cancer. Granite counter tops have been linked to elevated radon content in homes. Testing can make you aware of a problem so you can take steps to provide a solution.

Change the HVAC filters on a regular basis. These filters protect the equipment and the air by trapping pollen, dust, pet dander and mold spores. In homes with a high level of pollution, the filter may require replacement on a monthly basis. In most homes, the filters should be replaced a minimum of at least once every three months. Systems should be serviced and examined for potential leaks at least once annually.
