Pests are most unwelcome guests to your home and business premise. Some of the pests are only a nuisance. Some of them are scary but not very dangerous. Some others are dangerous to your family and visitors and may even be carriers of serious diseases, like, plague. Some varieties of pests are damaging to your property and may cause colossal damage if pest control measures are not taken in time.

Pests are of various types. They can be crawling insects, like, cockroaches, silver fish, termites and even more dangerous ones, like, scorpions. They can be flying insects, like, mosquitoes, wasps and bees. They can be rodents, like, rats, mice and squirrels and marsupials, like, possums. They can reduce the value of your property, cause problems, like, electrical short circuits because they can gnaw through electrical cables and wires and ruin your furniture and tapestry. They can weaken the structure and in isolated cases, cause house collapses.

Larger animal pests, like, rats, mice, possums and squirrels can set up homes in your roof and remote corners. Their gnawing sounds and territorial fights disturb the sleep of your family. They cause foul odours. Rats and mice can cause serious diseases, which can be contagious, like, plague and lassa fever and hard to treat, like, leptospirosis. Scorpion bites can be extremely painful and even fatal.

Chemical methods are not the only ones which can control pests, though they are most commonly used. There are other methods, such as, preventing entry of pests by closing small openings in your walls, doors and windows through which pests can gain entry. Other methods can be poison baits and traps, which are much more environment friendly than chemical sprays and fumigation. Predators can be introduced, which can prey upon specific types of pests. These biological methods are much less toxic but they are highly specific to various species of pests.

Pests can not only cause damage to the buildings housing commercial establishments, they can also have an adverse effect on the business. Visitors would not like to come to commercial establishments which are pest infested. No visitors would like to visit restaurants, which are rodent or cockroach infested. The same applies to places of entertainments, like, theatres and cinema halls, meeting rooms and seminar halls. The pests will definitely have a deleterious effect on business. Pest control work is easier in commercial establishments as most of them will remain closed on weekends and holidays, which can be used for chemical sprays and fumigation.

On the face of it, it may appear that pest control work can be done by property owners themselves but this is not so in reality. Pest control work requires special equipment, protective gears for pest control personnel and special training of the pest control staff to spot the areas which are most effected by pests and openings in the house which are providing entry points to the pests. This kind of equipment and expertise can only be available with well known pest control firms. It is best to call in such firms as soon as you become aware of the pest infestation in your home or commercial establishment. Of course, before hiring the firm you need to check its license status, its portfolio of previous experience of working with various clients. It will be better to contact more than one firm and then select the pest control firm, which is most suited for the job.
