When making preparations for a holiday season, the energy costs incurred in a home can be increase significantly by obscure lighting displays. Instead of a home owner changing their decorative plans so as to make savings in energy, trying alternative lighting technologies is recommended. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) and fiber optics that are energy efficient can save time, energy and money while still making it possible to have a bright and vibrant holiday display.

LED lights are manufactured using a coated semi-conductor material that is capable of emitting light when charged with electricity. For decades, they have been utilized in applications such as exit signs and alarm clocks. As much as LEDs were initially thought to produce too low light output necessary for decorative lighting, their brightness and light quality has been increased by recent technology advances.

LEDs come is a wide range of colors, styles, and shapes. They can be used in a variety of application, and when compared to traditional holiday lighting technologies, they offer a number of advantages. One of their biggest merits is that they have high energy efficiency. They use about 100 times less energy that the traditional C7 bulbs in use in the past, and about one-tenth of the energy used in miniature lights.

Other merits include a longer lifespan, since LEDs can last up to 100 000 hours, assisting in the alleviation of replacement costs. They are also durable, weather and water-resistant due to their solid-state construction. LEDs manufacture has improved safety as they are cool to touch hence decreasing the risk of fire by contacting flammable surfaces.

C7 bulbs and miniature incandescent bulbs are the most widely used lighting devices for decorative holiday displays. However, in spite of providing high quality and bright light, their operational costs are more than those of LED bulbs, and need to be frequently replaced. Although traditional bulbs are cheaper than LED ones, the cheaper operating costs associated with light emitting diode bulbs achieves a return on investment over the bulbs life. In addition, they are durable meaning that replacement and maintenance costs are decreased.

Decorative holiday displays can be added some variety and convenience by fiber optic holiday trees, as they can be set up and removed with ease. Each bulb can be illuminated by one bulb with a rating of 5 to 50 watts. Transmission of light is done through hundreds, or even thousands, of small fibers from that bulb, producing light in every branch in that tree. Since only light is transmitted, the fibers are cool to touch, reducing the fire hazard associated with holiday trees and saving energy.

When introduction of fiber-optic trees was first done, only incandescent bulbs were utilized. In modern times, many shops sell trees that have LED lights situated at the base. Just like other decorative holiday options, the LED versions have more energy efficiency and are longer lasting. The fiber-optic tree prices vary widely depending on their size, and are typically more expensive than incandescent models.

When setting up lighting displays, following the recommendations of the manufacturer regarding safe maintenance, operations and storage is important. This will increase their safety while reducing any possible accidents.
