The most popular items of furniture

The much awaited survey from the Furniture Retail Association, has just been published. The results are gathered from a wide variety of retail shops, scattered across the UK. What is unusual is that the data does come from the smallest shops, that have opted into the scheme as well as the giants of the high street, that we all see every day,in our home towns.

This has certainly been a difficult year. There has been a world wide recession, family budgets have been cautious and the manufacturers have been trying hard to maintain their sales figures, and increase their presence in the market place. The companies that have been successful, have been the companies who have been one step in front, and payed special attention to new designs.

Despite the fact that UK Ltd. has crashed and burnt its credit card, and credit rating, the amount of furniture sold on interest free credit, especially in the lounge furniture section was still high. The sales figures might not have been anything like as good, if it was not for credit available in this way.The same did not apply for bedroom furniture,as he individual items were often not bought on credit.

Beds were the largest individual selling items, of the last year, this was so for the whole bed market, form niche hand made pine bed market, to the budget divan base market. Bedroom furniture fared well too, this included niche markets like small wardrobes for small bedrooms, and the ever favorite pine wardrobes. These bedroom results were not unexpected as a good night sleep through a recession is essential.

Lounge and dining furniture held up well. Suites were down at 20% from 28%, lounge furniture was well down, which meant people would put up with the old TV stand for another year. The trend in Oak dining table, gained strength. It was though, difficult to have an accurate figure of farmhouse tables sold as these tend to be sold, direct from the few manufacturers left making them.
