Advantages Of An Above Ground Storage Tank

You should note that there are two types of storage tanks and one of them is the above ground storage tank. These are installed above unlike the underground tanks which are constructed below the ground and calls for excavation. They have a restriction on the capacity when it comes to none water content. This was set at 10,000 liters to reduce accidents. They have both the pros and cons.

Unlike the underground designs which involves digging the ground to create the reservoir, these tanks are relatively easy to put up and maintain. They do not involve long procedures therefore less costs. This makes them more acceptable individuals who seek to minimize installation costs and maintenance expenses. This has also enhanced development of storage facilities in remote areas especially water storage.

Minimal excavation is required when establishing these designs thus making it relatively cheaper. The only excavation required is for foundation only for the support. They are mostly raised slightly above while there are some which are raised high above the ground. In both situations the excavation required is very minimal slightly less expensive installation. In case where excavation is mandatory for underground tanks is in case of problems calling for repairs.

They are also quick and cheap to repair in case there is a problem such as rust in case it is a metallic tank or cracks in case it is a plastic tank. Their location makes them more accessible and thus easy to mend them. To repair, all that one needs to do is to get the required materials and take the necessary cause of action. This will take both less energy and manpower.

Another advantage worth mentioning is the fact that these tanks do not require energy to pump the stored content. The material can be easily extracted without energy because the tanks are set up the ground and thus can flow downwards naturally. All that one needs to do is set the extraction pipes bellow the tank. This is also an advantage as it contributes to the low costs required to establish and use such tanks.

These tanks also have their disadvantages for example they require additional space. To establish these tanks one needs to have an additional space because they cannot be constructed in open air but in a piece of land or above a building. For oil tanks they are constructed in a field and thus taking up space that could have been used for better purposes. Unlike with underground one cannot use the same space for two purposes because when set up, that space is completely out of use.

They are also affected negatively by adverse weather conditions such as too much solar or high temperature conditions. Such conditions may result to corrosion of the tanks and in other situations they may even cause them to burst especially in the case of plastic tanks. For one to avoid such situation it means construction of a structure that will protect the tanks from such effects. This will call for additional costs which will make the whole project expensive.

An above ground storage tank therefore requires extra management costs and expenses in order to keep them free from damage and to preserve its contents. It requires physical security set up such as fences and walls. This generally increases its costs. Apart from that, it takes extra expense to pump the contents like water or fuel into the tanks. These also contribute to extra expenses above the underground storage tanks which are more secure.
