Retail marketing dates as far back as biblical times. In numerous early societies, merchandise was sold directly by the people or group of people who forged, developed or found the items for sale. Enterprising men and women found ways to acquire such items and transported them to a central area where they could be resold at a profitable rate. As this process developed over the years, it turned into the familiar marketing environment individuals see today.

All marketing of this kind, whether participated in locally or conducted on a grand scale, is associated with a simple pattern. The latter involves the reseller, also referred to as the retailer, purchasing merchandise which he or she then resells to customers for a higher cost. To boost sales and reach a wider market, numerous merchants run multimedia ads. This type of advertisement is essential to virtually all entrepreneurs. A person may place ads on television, online, or he or she may use billboards to advertise a product or service. Magazine or newspaper ads, as well as printed circulars are also popular among such individuals. Although advertising is not free, the reseller will still earn profits if he or she offers competitive pricing and quality merchandise to each client.

Over the past 30 years, major advancements were made in the field of marketing. The Internet is responsible for many of these developments. As a substantial number of families and businesses gained access to Internet services during the 1990s, this advertising venue became more important to merchants looking to procure clients. Online sales were responsible for almost $50,000,000,000 in consumer spending in 2001.

The aforementioned marketing is associated with significant advantages for both the retailer and the consumer. One of the biggest benefits is the wide availability of merchandise and the broad range of options in each category. Many merchants continuously expand their product lines in an attempt to obtain new customers and create a large client base.

Although such marketing is associated with many advantages, there are also challenges involved with running such a business. For example, in certain cases the Internet has resulted in price drops that made it difficult for those running retail businesses to make a profit. Customer loyalty to local stores is also a distant memory in numerous areas due to Internet shopping. Nevertheless, any man or woman who wishes to have a career in marketing will be happy to discover that the opportunities are endless, provided one is dedicated to reaching his or her goals.
