Since sashes made their debut in the mid sixteen hundreds they have been extensively used in all types of homes. Craftsmen of old were proud of their skill and workmanship and they had reason to be as many examples of their handiwork are still being used globally today. Being made of wood made these frames vulnerable to weather conditions and daily wearing away to a point where many are in need of sash window refurbishment.

Traditionally sashes which move past one another along wooden runners as the window is opened and closed were constructed in a three by two pane pattern. Being made of wood these frames tended to shrink, become worn and loose letting in draughts.

Whenever a person needs to do home repairs or restoration a long term view when doing an estimate of cost may be the best route to follow. New window frames that are not as interesting as their worn counterparts are now available and are proving to be effectively draught proof and are cutting the cost of heating bills extensively.

Much of any refurbishing is done by hand on site and is labor intensive and costly. Old frames that have a piece missing or are badly worn can repaired to pristine condition.

New methods of draught proofing and weather strips have gone a long way to improve insulation. Noise proof glass is now also available on the market that one could used to replace old panes to lower noise levels. An inside locking device can be installed which allows a person to open windows slightly for ventilation purposes but stops them from being opened further to allow illegal access. These locking devices are easy and quick to remove in case of an emergency.

However once these frames have been restored, treated and repainted with any new sealants and paints readily available one may have the joy of continuous use of these beautiful unique windows that are infinitely pleasing and low maintenance bills.

Even though new frames that are aesthetically pleasing are available nowadays it is still not a decision to be taken lightly. Once old original sashes have been removed they and the special character they gave the house will be lost forever.

The cost at first glance may be off-putting and leaves one undecided on what would be the correct thing to do. However if one considers appearance, old style charm and look a person may decide that sash window refurbishment is worth every penny one will be spending.
