Being a server isn't the best paying job if you will just look at your base pay. You can earn more by relying on waiter tips that you get each day. Tips can help you make ends meet, and can even buy you things that aren't basic necessities. Some even use their tip earnings to go on vacations. But times are hard for everyone these days, you can tell by the diminishing tips you get each month.

It's not impossible to make bigger tips during hard times. They say many millionaires are still made during depression. Am not saying you will become filthy rich by serving at restaurants, it's just that it isn't impossible to make waiter tips during tough economic times. Try these tips for a change and see if you can make larger gratuities today.

1. Skip the flashy fashion accessories and go for modest earrings and watches. During tough economic times everyone tones down with flashy fashion statements, even customers. Act and dress like you need the extra tips by coming to work in your neatly ironed uniform minus the pearl earrings and diamond studded watches. Dressing in a flashy manner will not help you get waiter tips.

2. Subtlety let customers know that you need larger gratuities by discreetly letting them take a peek at your personal life. Let them know, in passing that you are a working university student, or mention your 5 year old daughter is about to go to school this year. Diners will be more generous with waiter tips if they know their money will go to a good cause.

3. Show that you care about their wallet. When a whole family of 5 or 6 come in, suggest value meals and bottomless drinks. This allows your customer to feed his family on less money and enables them to save enough for waiter tips too. They will appreciate that you made it possible for his family to enjoy a meal for less money.

4. Show the kids a good time. When a family with toddlers come in, give the children coloring books and crayons to keep them busy while their dad or mom orders and eats. Offer meals that kids would like to eat and talk to their children as if they were your own. You can also give a child a small cheap toy and maybe get more waiter tips for being nice to your customer's kids.

5. Be positive instead of negative. Your mood can be contagious and f you show a more pleasant demeanor, you will likely make your customer more cheerful. He won't enjoy his meal if you start talking about sad things or how the economy isn't really improving. By simply smiling more often, you can make your customer more generous because he will be in a better mood.

You can't make larger gratuities if you simply take orders and bring food over, period. You have to show a little more concern for your customers. Go the extra mile to make your diners enjoy their meal more and you will surely get better waiter tips. Try these tricks and see if you can make more tips tonight. It's worth the shot, just remember to psych yourself to be nicer and more thoughtful.
