While many people rely on vibration analysis to determine internal machine functioning, most experts will tell you that oil analysis still has a valuable place, and that every company or research facility should have a competent oil viscosity on hand. It can tell you much more then vibrational analysis can by itself, and it is best if both methods are used in conjunction to determine the best course of action for your engineering team.

A good viscosity test will have many things in common, and it can be fine tuned to meet the specific needs of your business. The newest labs are easy to use, made of hardy materials, compact, portable, simple to transport, very safe, cost effective, and extremely accurate.

The second thing to determine when considering which type of viscosity testing to select is where it is going to be ultimately used, who is going to be administering these, and under what conditions. For instance, a kit that is used on a deepwater drilling platform will have much different needs than one that is located in the heart of a research and development facility, and while both need to work well the one on the remote rig needs to be much more durable and self contained.

Also, some field equipment needs to be more sturdy than standard research grade equipment because of the environment that it is going to be used in, and in this case the oil viscosity needs to be made of the sturdiest materials, and also be designed to handle being outside for prolonged periods of time. This may increase the amount of your initial investment, but you will gain security of knowing that your engineers will be able to diagnosis issues quickly, and they will also be able to depend on the gear that they need to properly do their jobs.

Lastly, you are going to want to ask yourself who will be using this lab the most, will it be scientists, specialists, or work crews, while this may seem not to matter much, each group has its own set of needs and each have been trained to use equipment in different ways, so make sure you are taking into account who will be using the equipment not just the equipment itself.
